Ada Stamatatou, President and Founder of the Non-Profit Civil Company RACE FOR AUTISM GR, celebrated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities with people with disabilities who swam in the 18th Vouliagmeni Winter Open Water Swimming race at the Vouliagmeni Nautical Club together with the Underwater Demolition Unit DYK of the Underwater Demolition Command MYK " the well-known frogmen” of the Greek Navy.
Her powerful message: "THERE ARE NO SPECIAL NEEDS, THERE ARE ONLY SPECIAL FORCES"
“Stop calling us People with Special Needs, either out of politeness or out of fear of offending us, or because you are afraid of the word DISABILITY.
It is a misrepresentation by Special Needs in Education which refers to learning difficulties rather than disability. Today in the 18th Winter Open Water Swimming race of the Nautical Club of Vouliagmeni, an established race, People with Disabilities took part equally with 800 other swimmers.
I sincerely thank the Underwater Demolition Command DYK ,the Board of Directors of the Vouliagmeni Nautical Club, the President Ms. Stella Lazarou who agreed with my idea to invite a delegation of the of the Underwater Demolition Unit MYK of Greek Navy to symbolically accompany the People with Disabilities in the open water swimming race who competed equally in the distances of 750/1500/3000 meters. We no longer say people with special needs, we say PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES.
We can do EVERYTHING. We aim higher. We are made to be strong. We are built to set goals and achieve them. We are built to EXCEED these goals. To surpass ourselves. Just like the Underwater Demolition Units the well-known as FROGMEN of the Greek Navy who are by our side, not only on international days of celebration, but on everyday basis “

18-year-old Michalis Kalleres, from the Greek island of Kos an autistic athlete from the Athletic Club Ionas for athletes with disabilities, with the support of his mother and his coach participated in a triathlon sprint race at Sounio in a relay team with another severally autistic 25 years old Ioannis Goros who was accompanied by his mother the founder of NPO Race for Autism Gr Ada Stamatatou.
In her words:
"On Sunday, November 19, I had the honor and pleasure of participating in a distance sprint relay race of the Whynot organization in Sounio, accompanying my severely autistic son Ioannis at the swimming leg.
The cycling and running leg was completed by 18-year-old Michalis Kalleres from Kos, who is also on the autistic spectrum and is a student at EEEEK on the island in a cooking workshop. His mother, with huge sacrifices, tries to bring him to Athens for training twice a month with the team of Ionas.
This very difficult project was coordinated by Giorgos Gountas, the soul of the Ionas Sports Club for people with disabilities.
It is important to give the possibility of equal participation for autistic people in a triathlon and we thank the organization and especially Mr Panos Rotas for his positive response and support. The joy I felt when I saw Michalis finish proud, strong and full of self-confidence is indescribable. Personally, I had unimaginable difficulty because Ioannis got stuck due to a change of scenery and was not swimming or responding to my commands.
He is used to swimming at another beach and every change takes time for an autistic mind.
But nothing is impossible if you believe you can do it.
Sports is the only way out for these children who have been living on the sidelines for so many years as different.
For them participating in sports it is the only solution for true inclusion in the society”.
